Authentic solo travel experiences

I’m Mary Ann –  bike nut, surfer, cloud architect and story teller.

Our cohort was brought up by the Silent Generation and preceded Generation X, before technology and social media transformed travel. Our desk jobs were never our identity, but up and quitting to wander the world wasn’t a viable option as it is today. Work was occasionally exhilarating but mostly grueling. We committed to the hard and delicate labor of providing and holding family together.  We weathered setbacks and stayed the course to safeguard our financial security.

Now we’re living post-work life on our own terms and refusing to be defined by age. We turn up in luxury properties, budget lodges and hostels.  Health supersedes work as we kick unwholesome habits.  Some of us are taking small steps along the path to healthy living; others are obsessively fit.  We are in our prime –  active, challenging ourselves and living a life of adventure. Always the journey, never the destination.

Welcome to TravelOn

Created by and for baby boomer-aged travelers that want to get the most out of hard-earned resources – for rugged treks up mountains and across jungles or creature-comfort in sumptuous lodgings.  Are you drawn to experiential, immersion travel?  Do you seek destinations where you engage with local customs, culture, and cuisine?  Here is a community for inspiration to remain fit enough to keep searching for sunsets that take our breath away, wide skies full of stars and unforgettable food.

Solo adventures for women that will not be defined by age

You already know how to budget and plan your travel. Health is our most precious resource. Let’s keep fit enough to carry weight, hike, climb and navigate water, sand and the stairs that often show up on beaches.

León’s abundant colonial heritage

León’s abundant colonial heritage

León’s tumbledown bus terminal belies its rich colonial heritage, instantly perceptible in its architecture and structure.  The chicken bus chucks its passengers onto León terminal’s sweltering bricks. Tourists are culled. Quick as a wink, my backpack lands in the...

Selva Negra: unforgettable pristine cloud forest

Selva Negra: unforgettable pristine cloud forest

The corroded, abandoned army tank at Selva Negra Mountain Resort’s entrance is the only noticeable remnant of the northern interior’s violent past.  At the Bavarian-style gatehouse, the guard confers with my driver and lifts the red and white striped bar...

Cascada Santa Emile a stunner to stare at

Cascada Santa Emile a stunner to stare at

A short walk from the rural highway, I enter an ecolodge that pierces a half-moon of jungle framed rock faces.  I explore trails along coffee, banana and cacao plantations.  I descend a steep pathway from the clifftops, along tiers of viewing points,...
